Gmail AI Agent: Connect Gmail and Hand Off the Inbox Work
A BetterClaw agent connected to Gmail reads, sorts, labels and drafts email for you, in plain English and on a schedule. It's built for founders and small teams who spend the first hour of every day in their inbox. You sign in with Google once, choose which agents can use the inbox, and the agent drafts replies for you to send rather than sending on its own.

What can an AI agent do in Gmail?
Here are the jobs teams hand to a BetterClaw agent in Gmail. The names under each one are the Gmail actions the agent uses, so you can see exactly what it touches.
Sort every new email
Read new mail each hour and label it urgent, needs reply, FYI, newsletter or noise.
Draft replies in your voice
Write a reply draft inside the thread, so it sits in Gmail waiting for you to edit and press Send.
Chase threads that went quiet
Find conversations still waiting on a reply, from either side, and draft a polite nudge in each.
Morning briefing
Summarise overnight email by urgency and send you one short email before you start.
Clean out clutter without deleting
Label cold outreach, newsletters and expired one-time codes so you can clear them in one go.
Log receipts and invoices
Find receipts in your inbox, including PDF and photo attachments, and write the amounts to a Google Sheet.
Turn leads into next steps
Spot new lead emails, research the sender and draft a reply to the hot ones.
Search your history before a call
Pull your last conversation with someone and anything either side promised.
Example: Email Triage (ready-made workflow)
Runs: Every hour on weekdays.A sorted, labelled inbox and reply drafts waiting in each thread. Nothing is sent or deleted.
- 1Learns from how you edited its previous drafts.
- 2Sorts new email into urgent, needs reply, FYI, newsletter and noise, and labels it in Gmail.
- 3Drafts replies in your style for the emails that need one.
- 4Alerts you to anything urgent.
How to set it up
Install it from the workflow directory, choose the agent that runs it, connect Gmail and publish. Want a different job? Go to Workflows → New workflow and describe it, e.g. "Every Friday, find unpaid invoices in my inbox and draft a polite reminder to each customer."
How to connect Gmail to an AI agent
About two minutes, with no code and nothing to host.
- 1
In BetterClaw, open Connectors in the left rail and stay on Browse connectors.
BetterClaw - 2
Search for "Gmail" and select it to open the connect window.
BetterClaw 3
Choose Sign in with Google.
You're sent to Google to approve access, then brought back. There's no key to copy, and the connected account's email is filled in for you.
Gmail- 4
Give the account a label you'll recognise later (for example "Gmail - work").
This matters if you connect more than one account.
BetterClaw - 5
Select Connect.
The account is assigned to all your agents automatically, so it works straight away.
BetterClaw - 6
To limit it, open the Gmail connector's detail view.
Each agent has its own row, so you can switch the account on only for the agents that need it.
BetterClaw - 7
Prefer an app password? Choose Email (IMAP/SMTP) instead.
It works with Gmail and almost any mailbox, and the full walkthrough is in the Connect Gmail guide.

What can the agent access in Gmail? Is it safe?
In the catalog behind BetterClaw's Gmail connector, the actions fall into three groups. Read: fetch emails, threads, attachments, labels and contacts. Write: drafts, labels, filters, replies and sending. Destructive: move to trash, delete message or thread, batch delete. BetterClaw's ready-made Gmail workflows only read, label and draft: they never send to anyone but you, and they never delete. Your Google credentials are stored encrypted, and agents never see them.
Your credentials are stored encrypted and your agents never see them. You can disconnect an account at any time from Connectors, and remove an agent's access without disconnecting the account.
How we keep your data safe →Gmail MCP server: do you need it?
Google offers official Gmail and Workspace MCP servers, but as of October 2026 they're part of a Developer Preview: you need to join the preview program and set up your own Google Cloud OAuth client. For most people the BetterClaw Gmail connector is the faster route, with one Google sign-in and no Cloud project. If your team is in Google's preview, you can add the server under Connectors → Add MCP server.

Gmail AI agent: common questions
Can an AI agent read and reply to my Gmail?
Yes. Once Gmail is connected, a BetterClaw agent can search, read, label and draft replies. The ready-made workflows save replies as drafts in the thread, so you review and send them yourself.
Is it safe to connect Gmail to an AI agent?
You sign in with Google, so BetterClaw never sees your password. Credentials are stored encrypted, and you choose which agents can use the inbox. Start with workflows that only read, label and draft.
Will it send emails without asking me?
Not with the ready-made workflows. They draft, label and alert, and the only email they send is a summary to you. If you build your own workflow, a section can stop and ask a person before anything sends.
Does it work with Google Workspace accounts?
Yes, both personal Gmail and Google Workspace addresses. If your admin restricts third-party apps, they may need to allow the sign-in.
I use OpenClaw or Hermes. Is this different?
Yes. There's no OAuth app to create, no skill to install and no server to keep running. You sign in with Google inside BetterClaw and the agent can use Gmail immediately.
Connect Gmail and give your agent its first job.
Sign in once, pick a ready-made workflow or describe your own, and your agent does the rest.
