Stripe AI Agent: Recover Failed Payments and Answer Billing Questions

BetterClaw connects to Stripe through Stripe's official MCP server. You sign in with Stripe and choose live or sandbox access, and your agent can look up customers, invoices, subscriptions and payments, answer billing questions and report on revenue. The ready-made Failed Payment Recovery workflow uses it to chase failed payments every morning. Stripe asks a person to confirm refunds and outbound payments, and BetterClaw lets you switch off any write tool you don't want the agent to have.

What can an AI agent do in Stripe?

Here are the jobs teams hand to a BetterClaw agent in Stripe. The names under each one are the Stripe actions the agent uses, so you can see exactly what it touches.

1

Recover failed payments

Find failed invoices, email each customer a friendly reminder with a secure pay link and follow up until it's paid.

Example: Failed Payment Recovery (ready-made workflow)

Runs: Every day at 9 am.
What lands for you

Recovery emails that sound like you, and a weekly view of what you got back.

Failed Payment Recovery (ready-made workflow)
  1. 1Finds open Stripe invoices from the last 30 days whose payment failed and works out why: expired card, insufficient funds, bank confirmation or a decline. It takes on at most 10 new cases a day.
  2. 2Decides what each case needs today: a first email, a follow-up, a heads-up to you for large invoices, or the end of the sequence. If Stripe can't be reached, it emails nobody.
  3. 3Emails each customer due one a short, warm message that fits the reason, with the invoice's secure link to pay.
  4. 4Pauses or cancels the subscription if it's never paid, as you set it.
  5. 5Sends you a weekly summary of money recovered and still at risk.

How to set it up

Install it from the Failed Payment Recovery workflow page, choose the agent, connect Gmail and Stripe, set your follow-up days and limits, then publish.

How to connect Stripe to an AI agent

About two minutes, with no code and nothing to host.

  1. 1

In BetterClaw, open Connectors in the left rail and stay on Browse connectors.

    BetterClaw
  2. 2

    Search for "Stripe".

It shows as an official MCP server card, so there's no URL to paste.

    BetterClaw
  3. Stripe logo3

Select it and sign in to Stripe.

You approve access on Stripe's own screen and come back to BetterClaw.

    Stripe
  4. 4

On Stripe's screen, choose the account and grant live access, sandbox access, or both.

Each has its own permissions. Test in sandbox first.

    BetterClaw
  5. 5

    Review the tool list.

Each tool is labelled Read, Write or Destructive. Switch off any you don't want, or turn on Read-only mode to block every write in one go.

    BetterClaw
  6. 6

Choose which agents can use the server.

New connections are assigned to all agents, so switch it off for the ones that don't need it.

    BetterClaw
  7. 7

Check Activity on the server's page at any time to see every tool call from the last 30 days.

What can the agent access in Stripe? Is it safe?

ReadWriteDestructive

Stripe's MCP server gives an agent a small set of general tools: search the Stripe API, read objects (GET requests), write (create, update and delete requests), get account info, search Stripe's documentation and, in preview, run analytics on metrics, subscriptions and billing. Stripe itself requires a person to confirm refunds and outbound payments through a confirmation link, and those approvals expire after 24 hours. In BetterClaw you can switch off stripe_api_write entirely, or set the server to Read-only, for agents that only need to look things up.

Your credentials are stored encrypted and your agents never see them. You can disconnect an account at any time from Connectors, and remove an agent's access without disconnecting the account.

Stripe MCP server: do you need it?

BetterClaw uses Stripe's hosted server at mcp.stripe.com, so new Stripe connections always go through it. Note for anyone connecting Stripe's MCP server elsewhere with API keys: Stripe has said its MCP server will stop accepting full-access secret keys and restricted keys without the Agent tag, and asks you to move to agent API keys or OAuth by 30 November 2026. Signing in through BetterClaw uses OAuth, so it isn't affected.

Stripe AI agent: common questions

Is it safe to connect Stripe to an AI agent?

You sign in with Stripe and grant only the access you choose, live or sandbox. In BetterClaw you can switch off write tools or make the server read-only, and Stripe asks a person to confirm refunds and payouts.

Can the agent issue refunds?

Only if you leave write tools on, and Stripe still requires a person to confirm a refund through its confirmation link before it happens.

Does this use Stripe's official MCP server?

Yes. BetterClaw connects to Stripe's hosted MCP server, and every new Stripe connection uses it.

Can I test it without touching live data?

Yes. Grant sandbox access only, run the workflow, then add live access when you're happy.

Do I need to change my Stripe API keys?

Not for BetterClaw, which uses OAuth sign-in. If you connect Stripe's MCP server elsewhere with secret keys, Stripe asks you to move to agent API keys or OAuth by 30 November 2026.

Connect Stripe and give your agent its first job.

Sign in once, pick a ready-made workflow or describe your own, and your agent does the rest.
