Hermes Cloud bills a small daily fee per instance, then charges inference and tools on top. Here is what a real month adds up to, and where BetterClaw prices things differently.
Hermes Cloud is the easiest way to run Hermes Agent without owning a server. You pick a name, a region and a model in Nous Portal, and an always-on agent comes up in about a minute.
The pricing is where people get confused. The daily instance fee looks tiny, and it is. But it is only one of three things on the bill.
This post breaks down Hermes Cloud pricing as Nous publishes it, works out a real month at two sizes, and puts it next to BetterClaw and a plain VPS. Both products are reasonable choices. They just charge for different things.
Hermes Cloud pricing explained
Hermes Cloud has two layers: the instance you run, and the Nous Portal plan that funds it. Both draw from the same Nous credit balance.
Layer 1: the instance
| Instance | Specs | Running | Stopped |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 4 vCPU, 2GB RAM, up to 10 sessions | $0.56 a day | $0.03 a day |
| Pro | 8 vCPU, 4GB RAM, up to 20 sessions | $1.09 a day | $0.03 a day |
How the meter works, according to Nous:
- Running time is metered to the second of actual uptime, plus storage.
- A stopped instance pays storage only. Your files, memory and configuration stay put.
- Billing comes out of your Nous credit once a day (UTC), in arrears, based on what the instance used.
- You can change size later from the agent's controls, and the price adjusts.
- Deploying needs $2 in credit or an active subscription.
That $0.03 a day for a stopped instance is real. Nous itself has pointed out that an idle small Hermes Cloud costs about 3 cents a day.
Layer 2: the Nous Portal plan
The instance price excludes inference and tool usage. Those are billed on top, from the same credit balance. Most people cover them with a Portal subscription.
| Plan | Price | Monthly credits | Rollover cap | Rate limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | $20 a month | $22 | $10 | 400 RPM, 4M TPM |
| Super | $100 a month | $110 | $50 | 800 RPM, 8M TPM |
| Ultra | $200 a month | $220 | $100 | 1,600 RPM, 16M TPM |
Each paid tier adds a 10% credit bonus and turns on the Tool Gateway. The gateway gives the agent web search, image generation, text-to-speech, cloud browser automation and an optional cloud terminal sandbox, with no separate accounts or keys.
The rollover cap matters. On Plus, anything above $10 of unused credit is gone at renewal.

What a real month costs
Here is the math for an agent that runs all month, 30 days.
| Setup | Instance | Plan | Monthly total | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard + Plus | $16.80 | $20 | about $37 | Light daily use. $22 of credit covers some inference and tools |
| Pro + Super | $32.70 | $100 | about $133 | Heavier use. $110 of credit for inference and tools |
| Standard, stopped all month | $0.90 | n/a | about $1 | Storage only, nothing running |
| Small VPS, self-hosted | $6.49 to $9 | n/a | $6.49 to $9 plus model costs | Hosting only. You pay your model provider directly |
A few things this table doesn't show:
- Inference is the variable cost. A chatty agent on a large model can burn through $22 of Plus credit in days. A quiet one on a small model may not touch it.
- Credits and the instance share one balance. If inference eats your monthly credit, you top up or the agent pauses.
- Scaling to zero helps a lot. An agent that only runs during work hours costs well under the 24/7 figure on the instance line.
For the VPS row, Hostinger lists KVM plans from $6.49 a month, with a 2 vCPU, 8GB RAM plan from $8.99. Those are promo prices paid upfront, and they renew at $11.99 and $14.99. That is still cheaper on hosting. It is not cheaper on time, which is the next section. Our OpenClaw hosting costs comparison goes deeper on VPS pricing.

What you still manage on Hermes Cloud
Hermes Cloud removes the server work. You don't patch an OS, run Docker, or keep a process alive. That is a big improvement over self-hosting, and our Hermes Agent Docker install guide shows how much work it saves.
What stays with you:
- Watching the credit balance. Instance, inference and tools all draw from it. Nous's own docs show a Hermes MCP server you can use to ask "roughly what is each agent costing?", which tells you this is something people check.
- Choosing the model and size, and resizing when the agent outgrows Standard.
- Managing the rollover cap, so you don't lose credit at renewal.
- Wiring channels. Telegram, Discord, Slack, Email and the CLI all reach the same agent.
- Deciding when to stop instances. Stopping drops you to storage pricing, but a stopped agent doesn't answer messages.
None of this is hard. It is just ongoing, and it is the part of the bill that is measured in attention rather than dollars.
If the per-day model fits how you work, Hermes Cloud is a clean way to run Hermes. If you would rather have one flat number, that is what BetterClaw is built around. See BetterClaw pricing.
Side by side
| Hermes Cloud | BetterClaw | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | $0.56 to $1.09 a day per instance, plus inference and tools from Nous credit | Flat monthly plan: Basic $19, Pro $49 ($39 annual), Business $149 ($119 annual) |
| Model access | Models through Nous Portal, billed against your credit | Bring your own key from 28+ providers, zero markup on inference |
| Connectors and channels | Telegram, Discord, Slack, Email, CLI, plus the Tool Gateway | 120+ connectors. Telegram, Slack, Discord, Gmail, custom webhooks on Business |
| MCP | Hermes Agent supports local stdio and remote HTTP MCP servers | MCP client for remote servers (Streamable HTTP or SSE) on every paid plan |
| Local models | Not listed for the hosted instance. Self-hosted Hermes runs local models | Ollama supported, with $0 token cost on local models |
| Multi-agent | One agent per instance, with parallel subagents | 1 agent on Basic, 5 on Pro, 25 on Business |
| Team features | Hermes for Businesses: shared credit, per-member caps, shared skills | 2 team seats on Pro, 5 on Business |
| Compute | 4 vCPU / 2GB (Standard), 8 vCPU / 4GB (Pro) | 2 vCPU / 4GB (Basic), 4 vCPU / 8GB (Pro), dedicated 8 vCPU / 16GB (Business) |
| Refunds | Pay as you use, billed daily in arrears | 7-day money-back guarantee |
The main difference is who sells you the model tokens. On Hermes Cloud, Nous does, through Portal credit. On BetterClaw, you bring a key and pay your provider directly, so the platform fee stays the same however much the agent talks.

Hermes for Businesses
On October 7, Nous Research announced a $90M Series B at a reported $1.5B valuation, led by Robot Ventures. Part of that money goes into Hermes for Businesses, which Nous introduced in September.
It comes in two forms:
- Hermes Business gives a company one shared credit balance with per-member spending caps, plus a shared library where the skills employees' agents write keep building up. Owners and admins manage roles, caps and API keys.
- Hermes Enterprise runs the whole stack on the company's own infrastructure or private cloud, with a tailored deployment, single sign-on and SLAs.
Nous hasn't published pricing for either. If you are a team weighing Hermes Cloud, it is worth asking about Business before you set up separate personal accounts, because shared credit with caps solves the "who spent what" problem directly.
When to choose which
Choose Hermes Cloud if
You want Hermes Agent specifically, you already use Nous Portal models, and your agent is idle a lot. Per-second metering and 3-cent stopped days reward agents that don't run all the time. The Tool Gateway is also convenient if you want search, images and voice without signing up for five services.
Choose BetterClaw if
You want one predictable platform fee and your own model keys. Heavy inference doesn't change what you pay BetterClaw, and you can switch providers, or move to local Ollama models, without changing plans. It also suits people running several agents, since Pro includes five.
Choose a VPS if
You enjoy running servers and want the lowest hosting bill. A $6.49 to $9 VPS is the cheapest option on paper. You trade that saving for updates, uptime and security work. If that trade stopped making sense, our Hermes Agent alternative guide covers the options.
If you want to see how the flat-fee model feels with your own keys, set up your first BetterClaw agent. Plans start at $19 a month with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Hermes Cloud cost?
The instance costs $0.56 a day on Standard or $1.09 a day on Pro while running, and $0.03 a day when stopped. Inference and tool usage are billed on top from your Nous credit. A Standard instance running all month with a $20 Plus plan comes to about $37.
Is Hermes Agent free?
The software is open source under the MIT license, so you can run it yourself at no software cost. You still pay for hosting and for whichever model provider you use. Hermes Cloud is the paid, hosted option.
Do stopped Hermes Cloud instances cost money?
Yes, but very little. A stopped instance pays storage only, about $0.03 a day, so its files, memory and configuration persist until you restart it.
What is Nous Portal Plus?
Plus is the $20 a month Nous Portal plan. It includes $22 of monthly credit with a $10 rollover cap, 400 requests per minute, and access to the Tool Gateway. Hermes Cloud instances and inference draw on the same credit.
Can I bring my own API key to Hermes Cloud?
Nous's Hermes Cloud page doesn't offer it. You choose a model when you deploy, and inference is billed against your Nous credit. Self-hosted Hermes Agent works with your own keys from any supported provider.
Is Hermes Cloud cheaper than a VPS?
On hosting alone, no. A small VPS runs $6.49 to $9 a month, against about $16.80 for a Standard instance running 24/7. Hermes Cloud can be cheaper if your agent is stopped much of the time, and it removes the server maintenance a VPS needs.
