A research preview for US Pro and Max users that works in the background, messages you when something needs you, and shares your Claude usage limits.
It's 7:30 on a Tuesday and your phone buzzes before your alarm does.
Not a person. Your agent. Three things need you today: an invoice came back with the wrong amount, a client moved Thursday's call, and the contract you were waiting on is ready to sign. Want me to handle the first two?
That's the pitch of Claude Duet. Anthropic announced it on 21 October 2026 as a research preview: a proactive agent that runs on Opus 5.5 in its own cloud computer, sends you a short brief each morning, messages you when something needs you, and asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything.
Here's the part the launch posts bury. Today it's US only, Pro and Max only, by waitlist, and every background check it runs comes out of the same usage limits as your chats and Claude Code.
We build BetterClaw, an agent platform, so we went through Anthropic's announcement, its help center articles and the launch coverage line by line. This is what Claude Duet actually does, who can get it, what it costs you, and where it stops.
What is Claude Duet, really?
Claude Duet is an agent that comes to you, instead of waiting for a prompt. Anthropic calls it "a new app where Claude works as a proactive agent."
Three design choices make it different from the Claude chat you already use.
It has its own computer
Duet gets a virtual machine with its own browser. Your laptop can be closed and your phone can be off; it keeps working. That's also how it uses sites that don't have a connector.
It lives in one ongoing conversation
You talk to it by text or voice in a main thread, with separate topic channels that share memory. Finished work (research summaries, financial models, slide decks, dashboards) lands in a Create tab.
It brings your Claude setup with it
Duet carries over your Claude memory, skills and connected apps, and can use the "over 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace." Anthropic's help center names Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, QuickBooks, HubSpot, Docusign and Calendly, plus Stripe's Link and Shop Pay for payments.
Two small print items matter more than they look. Slack "works with limits." And Microsoft 365 isn't available yet, so if your company lives in Outlook and Teams, Duet can't read your inbox today.

What Claude Duet does alone, and what it asks first
This is the section to read twice, because it's where an agent either saves your week or creates a mess.
Anthropic is unusually specific here. Duet can read, draft and prepare on its own. Before it "sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything," it shows you the action and waits. A few things are off the table entirely.
| Does it alone | Asks you first | Won't do, even if you approve |
|---|---|---|
| Reads your connected apps and calendar | Sends an email or message | Trades securities |
| Drafts replies for you to review | Pays for something | Moves money between accounts |
| Builds dashboards, forecasts, prototypes | Signs a document | Accesses someone else's account |
| Prepares a morning brief | Deletes anything |
Payments work the way you'd want. You approve a maximum amount, and Duet pays with a single-use card that only works for that purchase, through Link or Shop Pay. It sees the card type and last four digits, never the full number.
If you can't approve right away, it finishes the rest of the task and asks later. That's a nice touch. The agent waits; the work doesn't.

Who can get Claude Duet, and how the waitlist works
Short version: US, Pro or Max, invitation only. Team and Enterprise plans aren't included yet; Anthropic says it plans to bring Duet to them later, with no date.
The waitlist flow, per Anthropic's help center:
- Open the Claude Duet product page and choose to join the waitlist.
- Enter your name and the email on your Claude account.
- Pick your plan and phone type (iPhone or Android), and optionally say what you'd use it for.
- Wait for the invitation email. Invites go out in waves, with no promised date.
- Open the invite on your phone, install the app, and sign in with your Claude account.
Here's the gotcha we'd flag to a friend. Access is tied to the email you gave the waitlist, and Anthropic says that if it doesn't match your Claude account or the Apple or Google account on your phone, you may not get in. Use the same email everywhere before you sign up.
So, the three questions everyone is searching:
- Is Claude Duet free? No. It needs a paid Pro or Max plan.
- Is it out? Only as a waitlisted research preview.
- Can I use it outside the US? Not yet.
How much does Claude Duet cost? The usage-limits catch
There's no separate price during the preview. Duet is included in Pro ($20 a month on monthly billing) and Max (from $100 a month).
But "included" isn't the same as "free to use." Duet uses your plan's five-hour and weekly limits "at the same rate as chats in Claude," and its background work counts too: the morning brief, the regular checks, the long projects.
That's also why it doesn't watch your inbox constantly. Anthropic says it "checks your connected accounts every few hours, because checking nonstop would use up your plan's limits much faster." Its help center adds the honest corollary: "something urgent can arrive between checks."
Here's what that looks like on a normal day.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 07:30 | Morning brief arrives |
| 09:05 | A client emails: "Can we move today's 2 pm?" |
| Next check, a few hours later | Duet spots it and drafts a reply for your approval |
| 13:55 | You approve, five minutes before the call |
The exact interval isn't published, so treat the timings as an illustration. The point stands: Duet is built for "today" urgency, not "this minute" urgency.

And if you're a heavy Claude Code user, budget for it. Every Duet check draws from the same weekly pool your coding sessions use. Anthropic is giving each admitted user one full limit reset, usable until 30 November 2026, a sign Anthropic knows early users may run into them.
Claude Duet vs Cowork vs Claude Code: which one does what
The "claude duet vs cowork" searches tell us people are confused, which is fair. Anthropic now has three agents that all "do work for you."
| Who starts the work | Where it works | Best for | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Duet | Duet does, then checks with you | Its own cloud computer, from your phone | Inbox, calendar, admin, small business tasks |
| Cowork | You do | Your desktop, your files and apps | A task you hand off while you sit at your computer |
| Claude Code | You do | Your code repository | Writing and changing code |
One more difference: Duet can read your work in Claude but can't edit it, and it can't see the files on your computer. If the job lives in local files, that's Cowork's territory.
Claude Duet vs OpenAI Dots vs Meta Muse vs Grok Bot
Duet is the fourth big proactive agent in about ten weeks. Here's the short version, based on each company's launch materials as of 27 October 2026.
| Claude Duet | OpenAI Dots | Meta Muse | Grok Bot | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Launched | 21 Oct 2026 | 29 Sep 2026 | 8 Sep 2026 | 11 Aug 2026 (beta) |
| Who can get it | US Pro and Max, waitlist | ChatGPT Pro (not EEA, UK or Switzerland), Business Premium | US and Canada | Paid Cursor plans, SuperGrok plans |
| Entry price | $20/month (Pro) | $100/month (ChatGPT Pro) | $0; paid tiers $20 and $100 | $20 (Cursor Pro) or $30 (SuperGrok) |
| Model | Opus 5.5, no picker | GPT-6 Astra | Muse Spark | Not named, no picker |
| Where it runs | Its own cloud computer | Its own cloud computer | Muse Secure VM | One shared cloud computer |
Two things jump out. Duet ties Grok Bot for the cheapest paid entry, and it's the only one at $20 that tells you exactly which model you get. And none of the four lets you pick the model.

Is Claude Duet safe? What Anthropic says
Giving an agent your inbox and a payment method should make you a little nervous. Anthropic's answer, from its launch post and a safety update on 23 October:
- Credentials: Duet "never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens." When a site asks for a password, you type it into a separate form on your device that goes to the browser, not the conversation.
- Sensitive data: a separate classifier checks outgoing messages and refuses to share the strictest tier, like card numbers and government IDs. Health and personal finance details are shared only if you explicitly ask.
- Testing: red teams tested it for leaks and unauthorized actions, an external penetration-testing firm reviewed it, and it's covered by Anthropic's public bug bounty.
Anthropic is also candid about the gaps. It "still might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent." Personal errands like booking tickets are weaker. And you can't watch or take over its browser yet.
An agent that admits what it's bad at is easier to trust than one that doesn't.
Who Claude Duet isn't for (yet)
Duet is a strong first version. It's also a preview, and it's built around one person, one model and one subscription. You'll want something else today if:
- You're outside the US, or on a Team or Enterprise plan.
- Your work runs on Microsoft 365.
- You want a different model, or a cheaper one for routine work.
- You want several agents with separate jobs, each with its own access.
- You need it to run at a set time, not "every few hours."
None of that is a knock on Anthropic. It's what research previews are for. But if one of those lines describes you, waiting for general availability means waiting for a date Anthropic hasn't given.
If that's you, it's the gap we built BetterClaw to fill: your own model keys, agents that run on a schedule you set, and nothing sends until you say so. Set up your first agent.
If you want a proactive agent today, anywhere
Here's how the same morning-brief idea works on BetterClaw.
Our ready-made Morning Briefing workflow runs daily at 6:30 am. It's read-only, and the only thing it sends is the briefing, to you. Pair it with Email Triage, which drafts replies in your style every hour on weekdays and never sends them for you.
The differences that matter if Duet's limits are your problem:
- Any model: pick from 28+ providers per agent, with your own key and zero markup, or run local models through BetterClaw Desktop.
- Several agents, separate jobs: one reads your inbox, another watches invoices, each with only the access it needs.
- Fixed schedules and approvals: you choose when each agent runs, and steps marked "ask first" wait for a person.
- No US-account requirement: it runs on your model keys, not a Claude Pro or Max login.
It connects to 120+ apps. It doesn't connect to all 6,000 of Anthropic's marketplace entries. That's the honest trade.
The takeaway
Claude Duet is the clearest sign yet of where this is going. The agent stops being a chat box you visit and becomes a colleague who messages you first.
Anthropic's version is careful, honest about its limits, and tied to one model, one country and one usage pool for now. If you're a US Pro or Max user, join the waitlist; it costs nothing extra to find out. And if you need that colleague today, somewhere else, with a model you choose, you don't have to wait.
If any of this resonated, give BetterClaw a try. Starter is $19 a month for one agent, Pro is $49 a month for five, and every plan has a 7-day free trial. Bring any model, pay your provider directly. See full pricing.
Frequently Asked Questions

It runs on Claude Opus 5.5 in its own cloud computer, sends a morning brief, checks your connected apps every few hours, and asks for approval before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything.
Is Claude Duet free? No. It needs a paid Claude Pro ($20 a month) or Max (from $100) plan, where it's included at no extra charge. It also shares your plan's usage limits, so background checks and big tasks count against them.
How do I join the Claude Duet waitlist? Go to the Claude Duet product page, join the waitlist with the email on your Claude account, and choose your plan and phone type. Invitations go out in waves. Use the same email as your Claude account and your phone's Apple or Google account, or you may not get access.
