OpenClaw update failed at "global install verify" (global-install-failed)

Last checked

The error

Update failure: global-install-failed (2026.9.4)

Failed phase: global-install-failed
Rollback outcome: verified safe to restart

global install verify is the name older updaters record for the package verification step. Install, staging, verification and swap failures are all reported under the single reason global-install-failed.

The npm global install of the new OpenClaw package did not pass verification, so the updater rolled back. OpenClaw reports install, staging, verification and swap failures under one reason, global-install-failed. Usually the rollback is clean: check that the report says Rollback outcome: verified safe to restart. Then fix the npm cause (permissions, an old binary on PATH, or a partial install), install the release manually with npm i -g openclaw@latest, and run openclaw doctor --fix.

Why it happens

openclaw update installs the new package with your package manager, verifies the installed tree, then swaps launchers. If any of those steps exits nonzero, the updater tries to restore the previous package and stops.

  1. npm permissions: the global prefix is not writable by the user running the update (EACCES or EPERM). Newer updaters name this global-install-permission-denied and print the directory and owner.
  2. An old binary on PATH: which openclaw points at a different install than the one being updated, so verification checks the wrong tree or the service keeps running old code.
  3. A partial install: npm finished but the package tree is incomplete or changed, for example after a timed-out postinstall or a slow disk.
  4. A bug in the 2026.9.3 or 2026.9.4 updater itself: on macOS, "Package rollback launcher backup changed" when the umask differs, and on busy hosts a 30-second package fingerprint timeout reported as a changed tree (issue #161257). Retrying with the same updater repeats it.

The fix

  1. 1 Read the outcome: openclaw update status. Confirm the rollback was verified, then check what is serving with openclaw gateway status --deep.
  2. 2 Check the prefix: npm prefix -g. If you get EACCES, fix ownership of that directory or move to a user-writable npm prefix. Do not run the whole updater with sudo, it can pick a different home and service account.
  3. 3 Check PATH: which -a openclaw and openclaw --version. Remove or fix stale wrappers so openclaw resolves to the install you are updating.
  4. 4 Stop the Gateway, then install manually: npm i -g openclaw@latest --allow-scripts=openclaw (drop --allow-scripts on npm 11.15 and earlier).
  5. 5 Run openclaw doctor --fix, then openclaw gateway restart.
  6. 6 If a previous attempt left recovery state behind, run openclaw update repair from the newly installed CLI.
npm i -g openclaw@latest --allow-scripts=openclaw && openclaw doctor --fix

Why retrying openclaw update does not help on 2026.9.3 and 2026.9.4

The update is driven by the updater you already have installed, not the one you are installing. If that older updater has the bug, a newer target cannot fix it. OpenClaw's docs and maintainers recommend one manual npm install to get past it, after which openclaw update runs through the repaired updater.

openclaw gateway stop
npm i -g openclaw@latest --allow-scripts=openclaw
openclaw doctor --fix
openclaw gateway restart

Still failing?

  • Look at the sanitized npm error lines and code (for example ETARGET, E404, EINTEGRITY) in openclaw update status --json and fix that specific npm error.
  • If the Gateway refuses to start after the manual install, run openclaw config validate to catch config keys the new version rejects.
  • If the old version keeps running, check for a second install (Homebrew, a version manager, or a system package) and reinstall the service with openclaw gateway install --force.

Frequently asked questions

Is my old version still working after this error?

Usually yes. When the report says Rollback outcome: verified safe to restart, the previous package was restored. Confirm with openclaw gateway status --deep before assuming it.

Should I use sudo npm i -g?

Only for a root-owned system install, and then with the system npm while the Gateway is stopped. For a personal install, switch npm to a user-writable prefix instead of using sudo.

What does openclaw doctor --fix do after a manual install?

It runs the migrations and config repairs that openclaw update would have run, and cleans config entries the installed version does not understand. Run it before restarting the Gateway.
